Art trip to the Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens

On the last day of the Spring Term art students from Yr7 and Yr8 explored Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens and worked with local artist and educator Kerry Cook. All the students that took part will earn an official Arts Award and have their artwork displayed in the museum and art gallery!

The trip was centred around the current exhibition of the Grayson Perry tapestries entitled The Vanity of Small Differences depicting the life of a fictional Sunderland born character, Tim Rakewell. The tapestries are fantastic and are on display until Sunday 5th June at the art gallery in the Winter Gardens. The students followed Tim’s story through the British class system from his working-class routes to becoming a computer software millionaire.

They had lots of fun discussing the tapestries and the different symbols and meanings in the artworks before taking part in some interesting drawing activities. They also created paper weavings and a textiles piece based on their own identity. All students were a credit to the academy.
