Careers Insight Talk - Dairy Farming

Today's talk took a different format. Sam from LEAF (Linking Environment and Agriculture) took us on a virtual tour of a dairy farm near York. The farm is family-run with Tom and Roger the farmers responsible for looking after their 200 dairy cows. This includes milking them twice a day 365 days a year. (They do have relief milkers so that they can have a day off!).

Our tour of the farm showed us where the cows live and it was great to see them wandering around and enjoying using the cow backscratcher. We also got introduced to the youngest members of the farm, week old calves, as well as the very friendly farm dogs.

We found out about a wide range of job roles which are needed to keep the farm running including farmers, vets (who visit weekly to check on the health of the herd), ecologists, agronomists, delivery drivers (who transport the milk from the farm to the dairy) and plant scientists.
