Careers Insight Talk - Heritage
Claire spoke to us about her career journey. Claire was the first person in her family to go to university where she studied primary education. She worked in primary schools before her career path took a different direction and she started a new career working in heritage.
Claire focused her talk on how the essential skills had helped her throughout her working life. This included:
- Communication - Both within her primary education role and her role at Hylton Castle, Claire has to be able to talk to a range of different people. She told us how this was not a skill which came naturally to her and she had found it quite daunting. She stressed that we should not shy away from things which we find difficult and should always try our best.
- Leadership - Claire's main message here was that she leads by example. She does not ask people to do things which she would not do herself. This has helped her to gain respect from her colleagues.
- Aim High - Claire talked about how she had to be determined when she was at school as she had found maths a really difficult subject. She knew she would need maths to become a primary teacher so she tried and tried until she got the C grade she needed to progress to university. She told us that we should always believe in ourselves.
