The Secrets Of Haven Point Author Talk

This week, students in year 7 were able to meet and hear from the exciting new debut middle grade author Lisette Auton, for a beautifully atmospheric, magical and accessible event inspired by rugged North East coast.

Students were introduced to the Wreckling characters, participated in a wild and interactive activity inspired by the depths of the sea, listened to an enchanting reading from The Secret of Haven Point and had an opportunity to ask many burning questions to Lisette. At the end of the event students were able to read her their own creations of fantastic and imaginative fiction to Lisette to receive her honest and enthusiastic reaction.

At CVEA we champion her new novel, it encompasses a diverse cast of disabled characters who are celebrated exactly the way they are, they have been created by the author drawing on her own experiences, as well as consulting a range of people to make her book accessible, fair and representative. Multiple copies of her book are available in the library.

Students also got to learn about what it takes to be an author and the job roles involved in publishing a book, something the English Department promote as potential career pathways. By hearing first hand from Lisette Auton of her experience, students were advised that through hard work, determination and their imagination they too could aspire to become published authors.
