Year 8 Rugby first round fixtures

Last night our year 8 rugby team had their first round of fixtures in the Sunderland All School's competition at Houghton RUFC.

An incredible turnout meant 19 of our year 8 pupils represented CVEA, demonstrating excellent teamwork, resilience and respect.

CVEA won their opening game, beating Oxclose by 4 tries to nil, with an inspirational performance from captain Zak Fitzpatrick setting the tone. Youssef el Asri opened the scoring with a dazzling run down the wing, showcasing his speed and agility, before Jaxon Spencer powered through scoring 2 tries. Ashton Innes finished off an excellent team attack for the 4th try. A special mention to the CVEA pupils who were asked to play for Oxclose to even up the numbers for the match, demonstrating the positive values of rugby.

In their final game against a very strong and organised St Aidans, CVEA went behind to an early try, despite some excellent defensive work. Undeterred, CVEA dug deep and responded, going on the attack with some sustained and strong running, eventually getting even just before half time through a try from captain Zak Fitzpatrick. Determined to win the game, CVEA continued to be aggressive and dominate the ruck. Eventually the pressure told, and Zak was able to cross in the corner for his second try, sealing a 2-1 victory.

Well done lads!
