Physical Education Curriculum KS3
Overview
The KS3 PE curriculum is broad and balanced and carefully planned to ensure that content is thoroughly revisited so that learning is consolidated and sustained. Physical Education is one of the most powerful mass movers in changing and improving the lives of young people. As such, a key aim of the physical education department is to develop a strong “sporting culture” within the Academy for both participation and excellence, for all pupils.
Through this culture we aim to 'create a sporting habit for life.' Within the KS3 PE curriculum, students are encouraged to be physically active for sustained periods of time, develop fitness and competence to perform, enjoy and excel in different sports, compare performances with previous ones to achieve their personal best, gain knowledge and actively model how to lead healthy and active lives.
To deliver all aspects of our curriculum we focus on Knowledge/Thinking development, Skill development & Fitness development to support the development of well-rounded individuals ready for life after Castle View Enterprise Academy. Students will take part in competitive sports and activities through both intra and inter sport competitions in both curriculum time and extra-curricular time, as well as a broad range of recreational activities.
Year 7-9
With this in mind students in Year 7 adopt the roles of Player / Performer, Official and Leader in a range of activities, the objective is to create a love for physical education by experiencing a wide variety of different activities and developing respectful relationships, and not shying away from a challenge. This is designed to build upon the knowledge and skills acquired from within the Key Stage 2 National Curriculum for Physical Education.
The activities of study include; An exploring my skills and ball handling unit where students initially recap and build upon the essential skills and knowledge acquired at Key Stage 2. Students then progress to study a breadth of activities including; Athletics, Gymnastics, Swimming, Rugby, Football, Netball, Handball, Fitness and Striking and Fielding games. In year 8 badminton is introduced into the curriculum to further increase the breadth of study.
In year 9, students continue to study a broad curriculum offer as outlined above, but with a focus on students applying more advanced skills and concepts, using KS4 level terminology more consistently and effectively, as well as linking in key concepts which will support learning moving towards KS4 study.
