Why Study History?

GCSE History at Castle View Enterprise Academy is an exciting and academic subject that encourages students to be curious about the past, question evidence and develop well-reasoned judgements. Students study a broad range of people, societies, and periods, exploring how and why the world has changed over time. They encounter different perspectives and historical controversies, learning to communicate their ideas clearly and support their arguments with evidence. Building on the foundations developed at KS3, students strengthen their ability to analyse sources, evaluate interpretations, explain causes and consequences, identify change and continuity, and make judgements about historical significance.

History develops students' understanding of the complexity of people's lives and the relationships between individuals, groups, and societies. It encourages students to consider how political, social, economic, and cultural factors have shaped the world, while developing the skills to think critically, evaluate evidence, and form balanced judgements. Through the study of History, students become informed, thoughtful and critical citizens, equipped with valuable skills for further study, employment, and life beyond school.

Through GCSE History, students develop the ability to:

• Think critically about historical events and interpretations, demonstrating responsibility in how they assess different ideas.
• Analyse evidence and establish inferences and utility from historical sources, showing responsibility through the careful use of evidence.
• Evaluate interpretations and consider different viewpoints, demonstrating respect for different perspectives and historical experiences.
• Explain historical events using accurate and relevant knowledge, showing ambition through increasingly sophisticated historical understanding.
• Analyse change, continuity, cause, consequence and significance, demonstrating ambition in developing a deeper understanding of the past.
• Construct and support judgements using appropriate historical evidence, showing determination to develop and defend well-reasoned conclusions.
