Course objectives
With the OCR National in Marketing and Enterprise, students can explore what it means to set up and run a business enterprise, as well as develop key employability skills and explore potential careers.
The qualification enables students to develop their technical skills such as market research skills, planning, promotional and financial skills using realistic business scenarios, as well as personal skills including time management and problem solving. Over the duration of the course, students will:
- Develop an understanding of business concepts, business terminology, business objectives, the integrated nature of business activity and the impact of business on individuals and wider society.
- Develop as enterprising individuals with the ability to think commercially and creatively.
- Investigate and analyse real business opportunities and issues.
- Develop problem-solving and decision-making skills relevant to business.
- Investigate, analyse and evaluate business opportunities and issues.
- Develop and apply quantitative (mathematical) skills relevant to business, including using and interpreting data.
- Develop as effective and independent students, and as critical and reflective thinkers with enquiring minds.

R067 - Enterprise and marketing concepts
Setting up and running a business enterprise is an exciting challenge which lots of people embark on every day. In this unit students will learn about the key factors to consider and activities that need to happen to operate a successful small start-up business. This unit is assessed through a terminal external examination (40%).
R068 - Design a business proposal
Creating a new product is an exciting challenge. This unit will provide students with the skills and knowledge to design a product proposal to meet a business brief. Students will learn how to develop market research tools and use research findings to decide who their customers will be, create a design mix and produce product design ideas. On completion of this unit, students will have gained some of the essential skills and knowledge needed to start a business, but also the transferable skills of creativity, self-assessment, providing and receiving feedback, research and evaluation. This unit is assessed through a coursework assignment (30%).
R069 - Market and pitch a business proposal
In this unit students will learn how to design a brand which will make a product stand out in the market, before creating a promotional campaign to get their brand noticed by customers. Students will then create a presentation that they will pitch to an audience. This unit is assessed through a coursework assignment (30%).
Why study
The business world comprises an enormous variety of different careers. This course aims to provide students with a practical appreciation of what 'being in business' involves. The course is structured to give students a broad introduction to business principles.
During the course students will investigate actual businesses and gain an understanding of business finance. Business has strong links with lots of other subjects and develops skills such as IT, as well as enhancing communication and mathematical skills.
Enterprise skills provide a fantastic progression pathway into a number of roles in an organisation and are transferable into all businesses.
All businesses need enterprising employees to drive their organisations forward, to have ideas and initiatives to instigate growth, and to ensure that businesses survive in this fast-changing world.
Enterprise is a key government focus, and is set to form an important part of the UK's global economic status, both now and in the future.
